When your child says they hate you

My 13-year-old screamed ‘I hate you’ at me tonight. I know they don’t mean it, but it still hurt deeply. How do you handle these moments without taking it personally?

Keep your chin up! Kids are kids, they don't actually mean it. Most likely there is something underlying that is causing this. Perhaps at school, or with friends. Best thing to do is to sit down with them when there is no emotion involved and have an open conversation. Their bodies and minds are changing which is new and scary to them as well. They are often very eager to actually talk about all this, they just do not know how!
